In the series of jobs left from last year, the next case was to make the new portlights.
Old Lewmar portlights were so scratched up that one could barely see through! On the other hand, you don’t need any drapes. But still, it would be nice to see through windows. 🙂
Last year I got new window screens made out of polycarbonate, but I didn’t have time the to drill them. You can save a lot by making them self. I think the new ones cost about 19€/pcs, where as the original brand ones must have cost 219€/pcs!
The job itself is easy, as long as one knows what to do. For some reason I had a hard time finding the pictures of the different parts at the time. But it’s an easy task to open the handle, after removing the screw cover. Once the cap is removed, you’ll get the idea.
Then to the drilling part. Learning from the old mistakes, I can say that it pays to be patient. Depending on the size of the hole, I’d rather drill three times making it bigger bit by bit, than trying to do it on one try.
To minimize the risk of chipping parts of the window, you can drill from both sides. I skipped that part and went all the way through from one side. At our yacht club Sindbad there is a good space for wood work and other jobs. With the proper tools it was easy to make this thing right the first time.
